Tankless Water Heaters
Early in the development of water heating systems for homes, inventors created a water heater that didn’t use a storage tank for the hot water, but instead applied thermal energy directly to the water as it moved through the pipes, creating a “tankless” system. However, these early experiments were not very reliable, and for decades the dominant type of residential water heater was the familiar storage tank type.
But the technology of providing heated water for household use has come a long way, and the current tankless water heaters are dependable, effective, and have a number of advantages that have put them on an upswing of popularity. At McCreery & Sun Of Colorado we’re proud to offer installation and other services for tankless water heaters in the Greely area. Give us a call today to learn more or to schedule service.

How a Tankless Water Heater Works
The conventional tank water heater applies its heat energy (either from natural gas jets or electrical heating elements) to a standing supply of water, and it must regularly provide this heat to keep the water temperature at the appropriate level. When a tap turns on, a pump sends the already heated water to the source. But a tankless water heater only applies heat to the water when there’s a demand for water, which is why they do not need any storage space.
It works this way: as a tap or an appliance turns on to demand hot water, the water in the hot water lines begins to move. This movement activates the tankless water heater, and heat exchangers in it apply the thermal energy directly to the water passing through them. As soon as the demand for hot water ends (the water stops moving) the heat exchanger shuts off.
Why Consider Tankless Water Heater InstallationReading over the description of how a tankless water heater operates, you’ll probably start to see some of the advantages. Here are the main ones:
- You won’t run out of hot water. This may sound too good to be true, but the reality is that as long as the system is ready to heat more water as needed, there’s no supply that’ll be depleted.
- Energy bills will decrease. A great deal of power is necessary to keep the water supply in a storage tank constantly heated, whereas a tankless water heater only turns on periodically, when it’s needed. You’ll cut down significantly on utility bills.
- A tankless system generally enjoys a longer service life compared to a conventional water heater, mostly because it doesn’t suffer the stress of constant energy use.
