Indoor Air Quality
Commercial HVAC Services
- Maintenance Program
Air filters are the starting point for finding a way to clean the air in a home of contaminants and pollutants. But there are times when these mechanical filtration systems are not sufficient, and smaller particles slip through and continue to plague the household. In these cases, the answer is often to pair the filtration system with an electronic air purifier. The right purifier will target minute and microscopic particles, helping the house achieve the best level of indoor air quality.
There is no single air purifier you can grab off the shelf of a store and install on your own. It takes IAQ professionals to identify the type of electronic air purifier necessary for the job and then to integrate it into the HVAC system and match it with the air filter. McCreery & Sun Of Colorado has EPA-certified technicians who can perform all this work. Simply give them a call in Greely and get ready to enjoy healthier air.

How Air Purifiers Work
There are a number of different types of electronic air purifiers. The most common model uses ionization to eliminate airborne contaminant as they move through a home’s ventilation system. The purifier creates an electric field called a corona discharge. This has the effect of ionizing (adding or subtracting an electron) from the larger particles in the air, i.e. the ones you want removed. If a particle gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged. If it loses an electron, it becomes positively charged. The charged particles are then drawn down toward two plates on the purifier that have opposite charges. The particles can then be easily removed and cleaned. Charged particles also attract each other, clumping together and falling from the air.
What Types of Particles Will Air Purifiers Remove?
Air purifiers are more effective at eliminating smaller particles than air filters. A standard air filter with a MERV rating of 8 traps particles down to 0.3 microns with 99% effectiveness. But an electronic air purifier will affect particulates down to 0.1 microns. This makes them useful against chemicals, smoke, pesticides, formaldehyde, lead, odor molecules, and a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that often go right through standard air filters. Some more powerful air filters can work against these contaminants, but they will also work against the air flow from the HVAC system. Air purifiers, on the other hand, don’t have any impact on air flow at all.
